Now that we have covered
the basics it is time to learn HOW TO PLAY!
First lets introduce the pieces
and their moves:
King: This is the most important (though
not the most powerful) piece of the game. Like the European king
the Japanese king will move one square in any direction.
Gold (General): The Gold (General) is
quite important and it moves one square in any direction besides
diagonally backwards.
Silver (General): The Silver (General)
is like the Gold (General) except that instead of not being able
to move diagonally backwards the Silver (General) cannot move
vertically backwards.
Lance: The Lance moves forward any distance.
Bishop: The Bishop moves diagonally
for any distance.
Rook: The Rook moves horizontally and
vertically for any distance.
Knight: The knight is like the European
knight although it moves 2 squares forward and 1 square
horizontally or vertically.
Pawn: The pawn moves one square forward
and also capures that way.
_________Promoted
Pieces_________
By passing over the promotion
line that is 6 squares counting from where the end of board is
closest to you the piece gets promoted. Unlike European promotion
however, Japanese promotion units have to promote to certain
pieces although you don't have to promote unless you are stuck
(e.g. The lance is on the last square and cannot move)
Promoted Silver: The promoted Silver
moves as a Gold.
Promoted Lance:The promoted Lance moves
as a Gold.
Promoted Bishop: The promoted Bishop
keeps its own move but can move one square vertically or horizontally.
Promoted Rook: The promoted Rook keeps
its own move but can move one square diagonally.
Promoted Knight:The promoted Knight
moves like a Gold.
Promoted Pawn; The promoted Pawn moves
like a Gold.
